Tibetan National Uprising Day protest march
10 March 2009
From a press release by the Tibetan Community, TWA, SFT, RTYC and USTC in NY & NJ:

"March 10, 2009 marks the 50th Tibetan National Uprising Day. Half a century ago on this day in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet, more than 30,000 Tibetans rose up against the brutal illegal occupation of Tibet by China and called for Tibet's Independence. They surrounded the Norbulingka (summer palace) to protect HH the Dalai Lama who is the spiritual and temporal head of the Tibetans from being abducted by the Chinese Army. HH the Dalai Lama and hundreds of thousands of Tibetans were forced to flee into exile. The Tibetal Govt. in Exile was established in India in 1959 to continue the Tibetan Movement.

"For the next half century, Tibetans have been suffering immensely under the Chinese Occupation. More than 1.2 Million Tibetans have lost their lives as a direct result of the Chinese Occupation of Tibet. Just in 2008 alone more than 209 Tibetans were killed, thousands were detained and tortured....

"Tibetans' refusal to be silenced, even in this darkest hour, shows how important it is for those of us in free countries to take action in support of Tibetans' struggle for rights and freedom, and for our governments to take stronger steps to bring the Chinese government to the negotiating table about Tibet."
