5th Avenue and 44th Street
2 February 2013
I have been "shooting in black and white" for a couple of weeks, ever since my last trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. I put that in quotation marks, because I shoot Canon RAW with my EOS 5D. But I compose my shots for black and white, and my LCD is set to black and white. So I composed this shot specifically for the contrast of shades of grey, white, and black. It took some experimentation for me to find the right settings to not blow out the falling snowflakes and also gain enough detail that the scene is clear. I did a happy dance when I got it just right.

2 February 2013
The cold temperatures and threat of snow flurries led Jess and I to postpone our trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden yet again and opt for dinner, instead. This is the view that greeted us later in the evening. By Sunday afternoon most of the snow was either melted in the sun or shoved/salted off the paths. I’m glad I captured it while it was new.

An empty swing is a sad sight, isn’t it? Let me see what I can do about that…

Hoboken, NJ, as seen from Governor’s Island
23 June 2012
When I was an undergraduate engineering student at NJ Institute of Technology (way back when I exercised my pet pterodactyl every morning before calculus class…*sniffs*…Muffy was a sweet thing, she was), I used to love going to somewhat quiet Hoboken to shop. In the decades since then, Hoboken has expanded to have an impressive waterfront presence. Ferries run back and forth between Manhattan and Hoboken regularly, and the buildings gleam in the sunlight. I usually pay more attention to Manhattan during my photo outings, but it was nice to turn my lens toward Hoboken, this time.
