Afterglow

Even in one of the largest, busiest cities in the world sunsets are a glorious reminder of our connection to nature. It’s easy to forget about nature in the middle of a concrete jungle. One evening I was marveling at the sunset from our 11th floor window, and my partner said, “Mother Nature always puts on a show. We just have to make time to pay attention to it.”

In each photograph I included silhouettes of the city, because I want the viewer to remain aware that this natural display of beauty happened in a densely populated urban area, not on a mountaintop or rolling countryside. So often we dismiss cities as places where nature does not touch us, cannot touch us, because of the tall buildings, traffic, noise pollution, air pollution, and light pollution. We are usually shown glowing sunsets from the shore of an ocean or lake, or at the top of a hill surrounded by plains. It gives the impression a city-dweller is missing out on the beauty of life and must “escape” the city in order to get back in touch with it. It is that mindset, not the city itself, that separates city-dwellers from nature. The truth is nature remains all around us…we just have to make time to pay attention to it.
