I don’t usually photograph unhoused, compromised, or vulnerable people, but in this case I made an exception. Most people rushing by probably did not see the person lying under the LIRR departures screen. I saw them, and photographing them was my way of bearing witness.
All photographers are documentarians to some extent. My photo proves this person was there at that time and date, for better or worse.
I hope they are okay today.
